{"id":3420,"date":"2012-05-21T22:42:56","date_gmt":"2012-05-22T02:42:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pixel-shredder.com\/blog\/?p=3420"},"modified":"2012-06-16T01:38:33","modified_gmt":"2012-06-16T05:38:33","slug":"microsoft-millennials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pixel-shredder.com\/blog\/microsoft-millennials\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft&#8217;s Gaming Division: Changing Millennials&#8217; Minds About &#8220;M$&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As it turns out, having an &#8220;$&#8221; in your name makes it a whole lot easier to be generous in paying for your mistakes, as evidenced by &#8220;Micro$oft&#8221;&#8216;s latest in a series of costly apologies to customers. When called out over a bug which disabled the split-screen multiplayer feature of the 360 release of <em>Minecraft<\/em> for some users, Xbox corporate offered affected users a full refund. Say what you will about the Microsoft company history, but their Games Division&#8217;s ability to guilt trip their higher-ups into doing right by their mistakes continues to impress me.<\/p>\n<p>As a soon-to-be-former RIT student(!), I&#8217;ve interacted with Microsoft&#8217;s games division on multiple occasions. Far from representing the cutthroat corporate culture the company became synonymous with in the 1990&#8217;s, these Microsoft guys were relaxed, fun, innovative, creative&#8230; the total antithesis of the Microsoft I grew up with.<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere is this better illustrated than in their reaction to the homebrewing cottage industry which sprang up in the wake of Kinect&#8217;s release. 90&#8217;s Microsoft would&#8217;ve responded with Cease-and-Desist&#8217;s; last year&#8217;s Microsoft cheered on when a tech company put out a bounty to the first person or group to successfully create open-source drivers for the peripheral (although to be fair, they did <a title=\"flip-flop\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/211299\/microsoft_flipflops_on_kinect_computer_hack.html\" target=\"_blank\">flip-flop<\/a>\u00a0a bit first). 90&#8217;s M$ would have bought out all the startups working with their licensed tech, and <a title=\"gutted them\" href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/2010-1071-281035.html\" target=\"_blank\">gutted them<\/a>; today&#8217;s MS <a title=\"houses several startups working on apps for Kinect\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/report-on-business\/small-business\/sb-tools\/small-business-briefing\/microsoft-houses-startups-to-build-kinect-apps\/article2440969\/\" target=\"_blank\">houses several companies<\/a>\u00a0working on Kinect apps.<\/p>\n<p>They may not be <a title=\"perfect\" href=\"http:\/\/images.businessweek.com\/ss\/09\/04\/0407_failed_merger_talks\/19.htm\" target=\"_blank\">perfect<\/a>, but I think Microsoft deserves a decent amount of credit for trying to change their ways, and for giving the Xbox division the freedom it needs to earn the trust and respect of this generation of gamers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"g-crossposting-att\">\n<div class=\"g-crossposting-att-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.gawker.com\/~r\/kotaku\/full\/~3\/ixP53_xEKRg\/microsoft-does-the-right-thing-offers-full-refunds-to-select-minecraft-gamers\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Does the Right Thing, Offers Full Refunds to Select Minecraft Gamers<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"g-crossposting-att-img\" style=\"float: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.gawker.com\/~r\/kotaku\/full\/~3\/ixP53_xEKRg\/microsoft-does-the-right-thing-offers-full-refunds-to-select-minecraft-gamers\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images0-focus-opensocial.googleusercontent.com\/gadgets\/proxy?container=focus&amp;gadget=a&amp;resize_h=100&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.gawkerassets.com%2Fimg%2F17nce69jq0t8ajpg%2Foriginal.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"g-crossposting-att-txt\">Slammed with complaints over how it failed to warn gamers that the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft won&#8217;t run in splitscreen for all customers, Microsoft is revising its listing for the game and offering&#8230;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"g-crossposting-backlink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/110201780316922068503\/posts\/T1a1EJBvEKK\" target=\"_blank\">This was posted on Google+\u2026<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"SPOSTARBUST-Related-Posts\"><H4>Related Awesome<\/H4><ul class=\"entry-meta\"><li class=\"SPOSTARBUST-Related-Post\"><a title=\"How to Save the Wii U, in 3 Simple Steps\" href=\"https:\/\/pixel-shredder.com\/blog\/how-save-wii-u-3-simple-steps\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">How to Save the Wii U, in 3 Simple Steps<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"SPOSTARBUST-Related-Post\"><a title=\"Donglegate Should Be About Common Courtesy, Not Sexism\" href=\"https:\/\/pixel-shredder.com\/blog\/donglegate-common-courtesy-sexism\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Donglegate Should Be About Common Courtesy, Not Sexism<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"SPOSTARBUST-Related-Post\"><a title=\"House of Cards: Netflix and the Future of Television\" href=\"https:\/\/pixel-shredder.com\/blog\/house-of-cards-netflix-future-tv\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">House of Cards: Netflix and the Future of Television<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As it turns out, having an &#8220;$&#8221; in your name makes it a whole lot easier to be generous in paying for your mistakes, as evidenced by &#8220;Micro$oft&#8221;&#8216;s latest in a series of costly apologies to customers.
